Don’t Talk About It, Be About It
Over the years, I’ve met so many people who say they are going to do this or that. Only a handful have actually been serious enough to at least make an attempt to reach for their goals. Everyone wants to be rich yet they continue to work at the same dead end job day in and day out. There is nothing wrong with paying your dues or taking care of the family. At the very least, register for a class at a community college, read a book about whatever you are trying to do (the library or the internet is a place to get free books by the way), or jog around the block to work on your fitness. There are not many acceptable reasons out there.
“So, what do you think stops most people from “being about it”?
There are several key factors that prevent us from achieving our goals. The major factors are: lacking a positive self-image, laziness, fear, and excuses. I will address developing a postive self-image, fear and laziness in another post, but today I want to focus on excuses.
Excuses are lies we tell ourselves to avoid dealing with the truth.
As long as we continue to use excuses to validate our shortcomings, we will never move past them. We have to address the underlying problems before we can move forward. So what excuses do we tell ourselves the most?
I don’t know how to do (xyz)!
The real truth behind this excuse is that you are unwilling to learn or you have a severe learning disability. If you don’t want to start telling people you are mentally disabled you may have to admit that you are lazy. Which inevitably leads to the next common excuse:
I don’t have enough time
I personally don’t have time today to go sit at Discount Tire and get a new tire installed. If I get a flat in the next hour, I will go get my tire replaced. I will make time for this because it is now a priority. Once something has become important enough the time will become available. So many people have time for video games, watching tv, surfing the internet, and hitting the clubs/bars, but they don’t have enough time to change their lives for the better.
I don’t have enough money
If there is something we are trying to do that is out of our price range, we must set it as a top priority and put in the time to learn how to get it. I guarantee you that if you or your child is literally starving, you will find a way to get some food. We must attach this type of unrelenting desire to anything we want to accomplish.
The next time you justify why you can’t do something, ask yourself this question:
Are your excuses bigger than your dreams?
We are almost at the end of 2009. You need to ask yourself what have you actually done to achieve your goals and dreams this year. If the answer is nothing or just a few things, the truth is you have wasted another year. Time moves fast and if you don’t start making it a habit to achieve greatness, a decade of mediocrity will be the result.
Think about all the things you have been putting off lately. Want to lose weight? Find a friend to go walking or jogging with you, or gather the willpower to do it by yourself. Enroll yourself in a gym and go to the gym (buying a membership is a waste if you don’t go). You may kill two birds with one stone by finding someone you want to marry as well as get in shape. Want to have financial freedom and be happy with life? Keep reading this website!
We will do it together.
