Your Personal Accountability System

How many times have we created a goal, started working on it like crazy, then magically the goals we set and all the progress we made disappears?

It’s hard to remember certain goals and stay on track when you are extremely “busy”. Busy is in quotes because most of the time we say we are busy as an excuse. The word busy usually means that whatever we are putting off isn’t high on our priority list. We must create a system that reminds us of our goals.

We need to review our goals more than once a month. We should strive to review our goals daily. If we don’t, there will be too much clutter that will get in the way; emails, phone calls, unexpected disasters, etc.

“So what do you suggest we do Mr. Long?”

First, we need to understand why our goals aren’t being accomplished. Simply stated, when we work on a goal, we are simply completing tasks. If you don’t break your goals down into very specific tasks, nothing will get done.

Example:
Goal – I want to lose 25lbs this year.
Tasks (In no particular order)

  • Sign up for gym membership
  • Consistently go to gym
  • Create workout plan
  • Create diet plan

I usually do this with the Mindmapper software, but it can be done by hand. (Mindmapper allows you to break these goals down into tasks and subtasks extremely fast.) If you are like me, it becomes a very satisfying challenge to cross out as many tasks as possible. Before you know it, you are completing goals left and right.

Make Your Goals Public

It’s always helpful to tell like-minded individuals what your goals are. These people will encourage you to complete you goals and ask you why you haven’t been working on goals if you tend to forget about them. Having a good support group is extremely helpful in this process. It is one of the major goals for this site.

Create Visuals

Creating a visual of what you desire is part of the law of attraction (What the mind sees and believes, it achieves). It also helps to remind you what your goals are on a daily basis. The easiest thing you can do is change your desktop background to something you desire. In most situations, you will look at your desktop background daily.

I placed a nice car on my desktop before I knew about the law of attraction. I eventually planned on purchasing this car a few years after I placed it on my desktop. At the time, I didn’t have the means to purchase it comfortably. The strange thing is, I purchased the car one year ahead of schedule. I was forced to when my past form of transportation decided to give out. I was able to generate extra income for the purchase that I didn’t see ahead of time. The amazing thing about it is that I was able to find the same color car with the same options as the car on my desktop. While I was searching, I was more concerned with miles, price and condition. It’s amazing that I was able to find all of this so easily.

Set a Realistic Deadline

Open-ended goals without a deadline tend to get put off forever. I personally tend to misjudge what it takes to complete a goal and set the dates much too soon. It’s up to you to find the proper balance.

Write it Down!

Randomly storing goals in your head just creates clutter. As we all know, it is much too easy to forget about these goals when we haven’t placed them in a physical location.

Take Baby Steps

It isn’t fair to you and your health to set a goal to make 1 million a year when you are only making 15k a year and so far in debt it’s crazy. This is a very bad idea if you only give yourself a year to complete this goal. Can it be done? Sure, anything is possible. If you aren’t accustomed to setting and reaching goals, it would be best to start off trying to eliminate bad debt.

What are some of your immediate goals? Type them into the comments section below and we can use the power of numbers (combined effort between visitors of this site) to figure out a task list to complete the goal. Remember, it’s *highly likely* that there is someone on the internet that has completed the goal that you are working so hard to achieve.
