Interview Tips and Success Strategies

Once you arrive at your next interview, you will feel confident that you are qualified for the position. Even if you are the best candidate for the position, a poor interview can kill your chances. You must do a good job of selling yourself to the company in the interviewing process. WillieLongIII.com has prepared the following guidelines and tips to help you obtain the career you desire.

What is your goal?

Your number one objective during the interview is getting the job. Never give anyone the impression that you are “window shopping”. This attitude has no place in an interview and will only make you look bad. Once the interview is over, you can decide whether to accept or reject an offer. You won’t get receive a job offer if you act like you don’t want the job.

Interview Preparation

There are several things that you should do when preparing for the interview that can make the difference between receiving and not receiving the job offer:

Find out as much information about the company as possible.

This not only makes you feel more comfortable during the interview, it also demonstrates genuine interest in the company. You can check out financial publications or simply search the internet with Google. This process will be very helpful during the interview. The company’s annual report is also a good resource. In most cases, your interviewer will be impressed by your efforts and interest.

Dress appropriately. This may seem obvious, but you wouldn’t want to miss the opportunity for success because someone didn’t like your clothing.

Women should wear a skirted suit or dress with matching jacket, neutral-colored sheer hose, simple pumps, and a minimum amount of make-up.

Men should wear a conservative suit (leave the lime green suit at home), white shirt, contrasting tie, shined shoes, a belt that matches the color of your shoes, and over-the-calf socks.

Give yourself enough time for the full interviewing process. In many cases, you will be interviewing with more than one person during the interview cycle. You will not be able to focus on your goal, getting the job offer, if you are rushing the interview.

Arrive for the interview at least fifteen minutes before your actual appointment. If you arrive at the last minute or late, you will give off a bad impression. It’s best to visit the place you will be interviewing at least once before you actually make the drive. That way you may be able to anticipate traffic, and you won’t get lost.

Always stay positive and never talk about your personal problems.

Be prepared to ask the interviewer questions. He or she will know you have taken the time to think about working for them. During this process, you may find out that you don’t want to work there after all. You may want to ask about company policies, hours (especially any overtime requirements), travel, and more. You may want to ask additional questions, such as:

  • The importance and responsibility associated with the position.
  • People who previously held the position, their performance and where they are today.
  • The kind of person the employer wants to hire in terms of education, experience, future performance and personality.

If possible, avoid questions that relate to money, benefits, retirement, and vacations until you receive the offer. Remember, your number one goal is to receive an offer.
