Positive Self-Image

This isn’t some D.A.R.E. program preaching “I am somebody” to a group of kids. This is an important aspect on our path to success. So many times I see people who want to achieve something but lack the positive self image to achieve it. What you think about yourself is what others will think about you. The most important thing is:

“You can not consistently perform in a manner that is inconsistent in the way that you see yourself.” – Zig Ziglar

So where do we start?

Before we begin, I want to point out that I am referring to Zig Ziglar quite often since he has laid the foundation for these principles years and years ago. Some things don’t change, especially when they have been proven to work time and time again. If you have the time and money, I suggest you purchase his audio tapes or books.

First we need to take physical inventory of what we have. If there is something you don’t like about yourself physically, make an effort to change it. Before you do that, you need to realize that insurance companies are willing to pay some people millions of dollars for limbs that have been properly insured. So essentially, your body is worth millions of dollars. Your mind is just as valuable. It would take a computer the size of the empire state building to duplicate the capacity and capabilities of the human brain. Even then, it would not be able to make those calculations in the instant that we are able to. Also, when you look good you feel good. Make an effort to leave the house looking your best. Your attitude will be improved and people will view you in a positive light.

Make a list of what you feel you have been successful at. When we do this, we solidify the positive and push back the negative emotions that may have been consuming our thoughts. While you are making this list, write out what you feel are your positive qualities.

Be careful who you associate yourself with.

This is an important step towards developing a positive self image that I still struggle with to this day. If you see three “thugs” walking on the sidewalk, how will you distinguish which one is a good person or not? Whether we choose to believe it or not, people make assumptions about your attitude, status in life, and what your intentions are just by the way you look. The right people can lift you up and encourage you to reach for your goals and the wrong people will bring you down, talk about you behind your back, and become jealous of your current goals. I tend to attract a “questionable” crowd because I can relate to their current circumstances and I can always find a way to make extra money by any means. It’s time to cross out the negative people holding you back and move forward.

When your self-image is solid, you move confidently in whatever endeavor you pursue. No one can make you feel inferior without your permission. When you refuse to give others that permission, you will start accepting yourself.
