What is Success? Part 1
Now that we have a general idea of where we are, we need to know where we are going. In many cases, we find ourselves striving for financial success but forget about the other means of success along the way. I find myself falling into this trap quite often. It’s not nearly enough to be financially successful and your personal relationships are suffering. It doesn’t matter how much money you have in the bank if you are laying on your death bed because you’ve neglected your health for years. You aren’t truly successful until you master the following paths of success: Career, Family, Financial, Personal, Mental, Physical, and Spiritual. Before we discuss each path in detail, let’s make sure we have the proper foundation of understanding first.
If one area of your life is incomplete, the rest will suffer. Your attitude is very important in this process.
How can you find the motivation to achieve anything if your attitude is terrible?
You won’t be able to pave the way with your attitude alone. Good intentions and the right attitude mean nothing if you don’t have the correct skills to match. Without the proper skills, you are limited to how far you can go. Ask yourself what you can do that people are willing to pay you for. Is it a skill that anyone can do or is it somewhat unique? You must have a planned direction if you are going to use your skills to the fullest. After you make your plan, little things that would have stopped you won’t get in your way. So the daily issues of people being rude/mean for no reason, talking about you behind your back, taking your kindness for weakness, doubting your abilities, or trying to kill you won’t get in your way. I’m sure you’ve heard this quote before:
“Whether you think you can or whether you think you can’t, you’re right!” – Henry Ford
This is not an easy process. I still struggle with it everyday. It is very easy to get upset about what’s wrong with your life or let emotion take over your thoughts. Once you take a second to truly evaluate how much time you are wasting thinking about the problem instead of creating a solution, it’s easier to change. Even the president of The United States has to deal with people who try to undermine his abilities or hate him for no reason.
When I was mad at the world and the cards I was dealt as a teenager, my father constantly told me during his fight with cancer to THINK POSITIVE! He would also say, “When was the last time you felt better from being upset or depressed? It only makes you feel worse.” During the time I didn’t want to hear anything he had to say especially since he was absent during most of my childhood, but his words were true.
So spend today making the effort to adjust your attitude about life, success, and the many obstacles people place in your path. At the end of the day, this is YOUR life and you only get one chance at it. Don’t give someone else the power to steal your joy.
