The Richest Man in Babylon is a good book to start with if you are looking for a way to increase your wealth immediately. People always ask what they can do right now to make a change in their life. It’s a very short book so that shouldn’t be an excuse if you don’t like to read (and it’s cheap).

The Richest Man in Babylon is a series of financial stories. These tales are about a regular Babylonian guy who used some basic financial sense to build a great deal of wealth.

The stories give you solid strategies to get ahead during any financial time period. Much of it is common sense, but so many of us don’t have the discipline to stick to the plan. There are several key points in the book we need to address.

A Part Of All You Earn Is Yours To Keep
Before you pay anything, you need to pay yourself 10%. I often hear people say that there check is spent before they receive it. Usually this doesn’t include paying themselves 10%. That “little” 10% adds up quick. You will soon find yourself with quite a bit of extra money for emergencies/investments. If you absolutely can’t pay yourself, you need to try and reduce your expenses or increase your income. Many people suggest living below your means, but the more positive atittude to have is to increase your means. A good balance is what will help you reap your rewards the fastest.

Men Of Action Are Favored By The Goddess Of Good Luck
If you continue to do the same thing that hasn’t made you successful yet, then what makes you think you will get a different result. Doing the same thing and expecting a different result is the definition of insanity. We MUST take action if we are to see any improvements. Don’t let the fear of failure stop you.

Better A Little Caution Than A Great Regret
Do your homework before you blindly follow investment trends or the latest get rich quick scheme. Things that are worth doing usually aren’t easy.

We Cannot Afford To Be Without Adequate Protection
Being able to have an emergency fund available is crucial. Job loss, sickness, car problems etc. are all things that can ruin the best of plans. The hard part is not touching those funds unless it is absolutely necessary.

Where The Determination Is, The Way Can Be Found
Persistence, determination, and consistency is what seperates those that achieve their goals and those who continue to flail along without making much progress. We can easily do these three things as long as we

I like what you are doing here. One thought I had about ‘the richest man in Babylon’ was that the key message was to pay yourself 10%. But more recently (I read it more than 10 years ago) I think that they should have been explaining what to do with that 10% – ideally invest it into something that provides a low risk return – what ever that is depends on the person…I hope they did not actually say that – cause if they did I feel a bit silly for not getting it – as I would be much wealthier now!
